Emily's Corner!

I’m Emily and I have two awesome ferrets. They are the best pets ever. They do stink a little but so do other pets. I see a ferret as a dog only cat size. They are really smart and loving.

My ferrets are Louie and Bella. Louie is our genius trouble-maker. He is like the king of the family. He gets what he wants, with his clever ways of climbing, sneaking, and fooling. He is a character. We still love him though. He never causes too much trouble. Like once he found our cookie stash. He found them and drug them away. We found him curled with the last chocolate chip cookie. There were only two small cookies left anyway so we weren’t really worried. Of course it gave us a good laugh. That is his job.

Bella also keeps a smile on our face. She is our little blondie. She always has an innocent look on her face and she constantly follows her big brother around. Once we took her to the park alone and she just looked around for her brother.

Watching them play is even better. They scrunch their backs up and bounce around. Anything on the ground becomes a toy to pounce on. Their favorite toy is each other. They run and wind their way around boxes under my bed. It looks like the hallway chases in Scooby-Doo with all the doors.

After vigorous play they rest in their cozy hammock. Sometimes they lay on their back with their feet hanging as if they were begging. It is adorable. Sleep time is usually one curled on top of the other. They take turns being on top.

They love walks at the park. They race along the trail until they find a cool place to dig or something weird to investigate. They have deep hole along the trail they have been working on for a while. They sling dirt out then scout out excess. Their favorite places to dig are rotting trees or loose soil. They love to dig but are careful to stay out of the sticky mud. That isn’t what always gets them dirty. It is them rolling and slithering through the grass.

They are very loving. When we lost someone in our family and were upset, Louie sat with us for hours. It’s like he sensed it. He did the same thing when I got a fever. Whenever I leave the room he waits at the door for me. He gives me kisses and most of the time listens to me. In the morning he will get up and watch me to make sure I am ok. He is really a great companion.

When we got Louie we didn’t know much about ferrets because we weren’t expecting saving a ferret that day. I had never seen one before but I quickly bonded and now 5 years later he is my baby. He always ran away with his food being afraid of us. I gained his trust and began to sit with him while he ate. That was our first bond. Next I was determined to find all his favorites. I soon did and found that he loved sugar like any kid.

Bella was a runt when we saved her from her bulling siblings at the store. My mom made the mistake of naming her. We had to get her then. Of coarse we don’t regret it at all. Louie was getting lonely. Now she is turning one year old and is my other baby. When she was young she was chubby which is normal. Her name Isabella made a perfect nickname of bellie. Now that she is slender we call her blondie. She is easy to take care of because she won’t eat anything other than ferret food. We don’t have to get her treats.

She does drag food off for her brother though. She follows her brother around like a shadow. Without him she just hangs out on the bed. She does get annoying for her brother though with her always jumping on him to play. When she is not out he is less rowdy and will do tricks for treats like roll over, sit, stand, and climb. His favorite treats are dried fruit. He loves sugary stuff too. One stubborn choice of food is his hunting down of my dwarf hamster. He is very persistent but so are we.

A normal day with ferrets is simple. I feed and water them once a day and get them out to play at least an hour a day. Sometimes we play in my room or sometimes we go hangout at the park. In the morning they wake up and watch me get ready for school. The rest of the day they lazily relax in their hammock until I get them out. Louie leaves a small part of the day to try to get out. His tries are usually biting the bars and bending them. He is rarely successful. In our new cage he got out once. This was when his efforts paid off and a bar broke. We fixed it as soon as we realized and try to keep that time to a minimum now.

Here are some pictures of the adorable trouble-makers.

Are you convinced that ferrets are the best? If so please help this ferret shelter. Who knows Louie or Bella might get lost and end up here someday.
